Pietre dure inlay tabletop

2,250.00

18th‑century tabletop in commesso (pietre dure inlay), elegant Italian craftsmanship of the 18th century. Presented on a wrought‑iron base made between the late 19th and early 20th century. 86 cm (33.86 in) x 56 cm (22.05 in).

The commesso technique, born in Florence in 1588 with the founding of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, differs from classical mosaic: the pieces follow the shapes of the design rather than geometric patterns. Precision cutting, filing, and polishing allowed for fluid, painterly lines. The stones were then fixed onto a slate base with glue or wax.
